Information on atrocities committed by TPLF in Ethiopia

We, Ethiopians and citizens of European countries, members of the Defend Ethiopia Task Force in Europe (DETF-EU) organized in Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom would like to bring to your attention again the horrific atrocities committed by the Tigray Liberation Front (TPLF) in Northern Ethiopia.

We would like to recall that since May 2021, Defend Ethiopia Task Force in Europe has sent over ten letters informing all concerned bodies about the violent and belligerent nature of TPLF and its acts that terrorized all Ethiopians including those in the Tigray region for decades.

On August 24, 2022, the TPLF launched a military offensive, reigniting the conflict and ending de facto the humanitarian truce in force since the Ethiopian Government declared a unilateral humanitarian ceasefire, which paved the way for the provision of unrestricted access for humanitarian operators, including more fuel and cash to the Tigray region.

TPLF continued to militarize humanitarian supplies that were intended to support civilians, while failing to recognize and reciprocate the government’s peace measures. The terrorist group looted 570,000 liters of fuel from the UN World Food Program (WFP) warehouses intended to be used for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people in Tigray and has started military attacks in the neiboring regions of Afar and Amhara, targeting innocent civilians.

David Beasley, Executive Director of WFP denounced this outrageous act and demanded the return of the fuel immediately. Similarly, the UN Spokes Person and Chief of OCHA expressed similar demands and concerns, stating the disgraceful and disappointing actions of TPLF will seriously affect humanitarian operations in the region. TPLF disregarded all these calls, ignored peaceful alternatives, openly violated the ceasefire, launching again attack on Amhara and Afar regions.

TPLF has forcefully recruited and used child soldiers using them as human waves in violation of international law. It has also been pursuing a ”one soldier per family policy” in exchange for food aid to commit to its reckless violence insurgency and its continued actions to destabilize Ethiopia. Once again TPLF is actively engaged in serious human rights violations attacking civilians in Amhara and Afar regions.

This message is intended to inform you of TPLF’s horrific crimes and use of child soldiers. The Ethiopian people have no other choice than to take decisive action to end the TPLF madness, its terror on the Ethiopian people and its destabilization actions on the Ethiopian state. Ethiopians will stand with their government and the Ethiopian National Defence Forces as they undertake their legal and moral duty to uproot a terrorist group that will pave the way for a lasting peace in the Horn of Africa.
